Phil Woods at Birdland, 12/05/2012

6 Dec

Tonight at Birdland I was fortunate to catch a beautiful set with alto saxophone player Phil Woods, amazing trumpet player Brian Lynch, pianist Bill Mays, bass player Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin. The band quoted Charlie Parker, of course, as well as Thelonious Monk and Georges Bizet (during one of his breathtaking solos, Brian Lynch decided to have fun with Carmen!). They played standards and other beautiful pieces such as Going Home, by Dvorjak, which I thought was Georgia on my mind, initially, perhaps because both pieces are lyrical in similar ways.
