2013 Charlie Parker Jazz Festival

31 Aug

Last weekend, several most talented artists celebrated the spirit and legacy of Charlie Parker in Marcus Garvey Park as well as Tompkins Square Park. On Saturday, August 24th, saxophone player Jaleel Shaw performed with his band (which featured Jonathan Blake on drums) in Harlem. And one more time, French American singer Cecile McLorin Salvant proved her talent, while saxophonist Kenny Garrett closed the afternoon.

On Sunday August 25th, pianist Aaron Diehl, trumpet player Christian Scott, renown singer Sheila Jordan and saxophone player Lee Konitz all gave mesmerizing performances in front of a huge audience which seemed thrilled to get together to pay homage to and enjoy those jazz luminaries.

Konitz played some swing, in which a couple of dancers reveled – the musicians (including French American pianist Dan Tepfer, who has been playing with Lee Konitz for a while and who, as a Goldberg Variations specialist, never hesitates to incorporate classical hues into his jazz playing) looked delighted to have appealed to the dancing spirit of some New Yorkers. Last year, an even larger group of dancers gathered in front of the stage.
