Cedar Walton, Vincent Herring, Buster Williams and Willy Jones III at Birdland (3/6/2013)

7 Mar

It is close to impossible for me to be disappointed by a Birdland show. Last night I heard Cedar Walton perform with Vincent Herring, Buster Williams and Willy Jones III. Vincent Herring’s playing was delightful (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6GxmC02aOQ). As to Willy Jones III, what a smooth- flowing playing! I just wish the quartet had played a little longer than one hour since it was quite groovy.

Marc Copland, Gary Peacock and Joey Baron at Birdland

3 Mar

Last night at Birdland, bass player Gary Peacock, pianist Marc Copland and drummer Joey Baron performed some original songs as well as standards such as ‘Estate,’ ‘The Preacher’ or ‘Oleo.’ Overall the artistic synergy between the artists was special, and the club was absolutely packed. I was taken by most of the tunes the trio played but have to admit I lost their train of musical thought once or twice. Maybe I was not focused enough, or perhaps I could not always grasp what the musicians were experimenting with. But I enjoyed the fact that none of the musicians talked about the songs they performed or introduced themselves to the public. For Gary Peacock, performing is all about being “available.” The trio let their soulful tunes speak for themselves.

Last night drummer Carmen Intorre performed with guitar player JC Stylles (http://www.jcstylles.com) at Ginny’s, right below the Red Rooster, on Lenox and 125th street. The gig rocked.
